Best DDR4 RAM in 2026: Which Kit Is Still Worth Buying?

The best DDR4 RAM for most upgrades in 2026 is a 2-stick kit at 3200 MT/s, such as 2 × 16 GB DDR4-3200 CL16. AMD lists DDR4-3200 as the top official speed of the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 2 modules. On Amazon.com, DDR4 desktop RAM costs $6.51 per GB according to the ratioDB index (as of Oct 28, 2026 at 1:17 PM UTC). DDR4 makes sense for PCs that already have DDR4 slots, such as AMD AM4 systems. New platforms like AMD AM5 take DDR5 only.
This guide covers which PCs still need DDR4, how much to buy, how many sticks, which speed and CL (CAS latency, the delay in clock cycles) to pick and what DDR4 costs right now. Prices come live from the ratioDB database, speed and CL come from the listing titles. ratioDB does not run its own hardware tests. We match AMD and manufacturer specs with the price per GB.
What is the best DDR4 RAM to buy?
The best DDR4 RAM is a matched 2-stick kit in the size you need, at 3200 MT/s or the speed your CPU officially supports. Desktops take UDIMMs, laptops take SODIMMs. Check that your motherboard uses DDR4 first, because DDR4 and DDR5 do not fit the same slot.
Pick your kit in 5 steps:
- Check the platform: CPU and motherboard decide between DDR4 and DDR5. AMD lists the Ryzen 7 5800X3D as DDR4 only and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D as DDR5 only.
- Choose the capacity: 16 GB for office work and browsing, 32 GB for gaming and photo editing, 64 GB for large projects.
- Buy 2 sticks: AMD lists a higher official speed for 2 modules than for 4.
- Pick the speed: DDR4-3200 is the highest speed AMD officially lists for the 5800X3D. Faster kits need an XMP profile enabled in the BIOS.
- Compare the price per GB: The same kit can vary a lot between sellers. ratioDB sorts every offer by price per GB.
The cheapest new 32 GB (2 × 16 GB) desktop kit on Amazon.com right now is Timetec 2 × 16 GB with 2,666 MT/s CL19 for $193.99. A 16 GB kit with 2 × 8 GB starts at $104.99 (PNY 2 × 8 GB).
Which PCs still need DDR4?
DDR4 is the right choice for PCs that already have DDR4 slots: AMD AM4 systems with CPUs like the Ryzen 7 5800X3D and Intel motherboards built with DDR4 slots. AMD's current AM5 platform takes DDR5 only. For a brand new build, DDR4 rarely makes sense.
Your CPU's spec page and your motherboard manual tell you which memory type you need. AMD lists the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (socket AM4) with DDR4, 2 memory channels and up to 128 GB (AMD). The Ryzen 7 9800X3D (socket AM5) is listed with DDR5 only (AMD).
On Intel systems, go straight to the motherboard manual. It lists the memory type the slots accept and the speeds the board supports. A deeper look at both generations is in our guide DDR5 vs DDR4.
The price gap is large. DDR5 desktop RAM costs $15.62 per GB on Amazon.com right now, 140.0% more than DDR4 at $6.51 per GB. That premium buys you a current platform such as AM5. If your AM4 PC only needs to go from 16 GB to 32 GB, a DDR4 kit avoids replacing the motherboard, CPU and memory at once.
How much DDR4 RAM do I need?
16 GB of DDR4 covers office work and browsing, 32 GB is the sweet spot for current games, and 64 GB suits video editing and virtual machines. AMD lists up to 128 GB for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D. Kingston sells DDR4 modules from 4 to 32 GB per stick.
Kingston lists its FURY Beast DDR4 line with single modules from 4 to 32 GB and kits from 8 to 128 GB (Kingston). A board with 2 slots tops out at 64 GB, a board with 4 slots at 128 GB. For a closer look at what each workload needs, see How much RAM do I need.

A missing capacity had no new offer from a known brand at our last check. The table shows the cheapest offer by price for each capacity, whether it ships as 1, 2 or 4 sticks. "n/a" means the listing title names no speed. Current prices per size are also on 16GB DDR4 RAM and 32GB DDR4 RAM, and every offer is listed under DDR4 desktop.
Buy the size you will end up with. Adding a 2nd kit later turns 2 sticks into 4, and with 4 sticks AMD lists lower official speeds. A 64 GB kit starts at $492.00 on Amazon.com right now.
Is 2 or 4 sticks of DDR4 better?
2 sticks of DDR4 are usually better than 4. AMD lists DDR4-3200 for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 2 modules, but DDR4-2933 with 4 single-rank modules and DDR4-2667 with 4 dual-rank modules. For 64 GB, 2 × 32 GB beats 4 × 16 GB.
These are AMD's official memory speeds for the Ryzen 7 5800X3D (AMD):
| Configuration | Official speed |
|---|---|
| 2 modules, single rank (2x1R) | DDR4-3200 |
| 2 modules, dual rank (2x2R) | DDR4-3200 |
| 4 modules, single rank (4x1R) | DDR4-2933 |
| 4 modules, dual rank (4x2R) | DDR4-2667 |
Single rank (1R) and dual rank (2R) describe whether a module's memory chips are addressed as 1 or 2 groups. With 4 dual-rank sticks, the official speed drops by 533 MT/s compared with 2 sticks.
A single stick is almost always the weaker option on a DDR4 desktop. AMD lists 2 memory channels for the 5800X3D, and 1 stick fills only one of them. Look for "2 × 16GB" or "Kit (2x16GB)" in the listing title to get 2 matched modules.
What speed and CL should DDR4 have?
DDR4 launched with the JEDEC standard JESD79-4 in 2012 at 1.6 GT/s with a target of 3.2 GT/s. DDR4-3200 is therefore the highest common standard speed, and faster kits like DDR4-3600 need an XMP profile. What matters is true latency in nanoseconds, calculated from speed and CL.
JEDEC, the memory industry's standards body, published the DDR4 standard JESD79-4 on September 25, 2012, with 1.6 GT/s per pin and an initial target of 3.2 GT/s (CircuitsAssembly). 1 GT/s (gigatransfer per second) equals 1000 MT/s. Speeds above DDR4-3200 are factory overclocks stored as an XMP profile (Extreme Memory Profile). Kingston states that FURY Beast DDR4 runs at 2666 MT/s out of the box (Plug N Play) and is Intel XMP certified (Kingston).
True latency is CL × 2000 ÷ speed in MT/s. Crucial uses the same math in its memory timings table, which lists DDR4-2666 at CL18 with 13.5 ns (Crucial).
| Speed and CL | True latency | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| DDR4-2666 CL19 | 14.3 ns | common on laptop modules in our list |
| DDR4-3200 CL22 | 13.8 ns | typical for modules without XMP |
| DDR4-3200 CL16 | 10.0 ns | popular XMP kit for gaming PCs |
| DDR4-3600 CL18 | 10.0 ns | faster clock, same latency as 3200 CL16 |
| DDR4-3600 CL16 | 8.9 ns | premium kits |
In our database, 27 new DDR4 desktop offers from known brands name a speed, from 2,400 to 4,000 MT/s. 19 of them run at 3200 MT/s. A 32 GB kit at 3200 MT/s costs $239.99 right now (G.skill RipjawsV Series 2 × 16 GB), the cheapest at 3600 MT/s is $259.99 (G.skill Trident RGB Series 2 × 16 GB). That makes the step up to 3600 MT/s $20.00.
For most PCs, DDR4-3200 CL16 is the best balance. If a kit is unstable with XMP enabled, switch the profile off in the BIOS and it runs at its standard speed. Our guide DDR5 timings, EXPO and XMP explains timings and profiles in more depth, and the basics apply to DDR4 too.
Which DDR4 brands and lines are popular?
Popular DDR4 lines include Corsair Vengeance LPX, Kingston FURY Beast, G.Skill Ripjaws V, Patriot Viper Steel and TeamGroup T-Force. The memory chips come from a few makers such as Samsung, SK hynix and Micron. Kits differ mainly in speed, CL, heat spreader, warranty and price.

| Corsair | Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 2 × 16 GB | 3,200 MT/s CL16 | $255.95 |
Kingston specifies FURY Beast DDR4 at 2666 to 3733 MT/s, 1.2 V and 1.35 V, 34.1 mm tall and with a lifetime warranty (Kingston). Height matters if a large CPU cooler hangs over the memory slots. Tall heat spreaders and RGB kits do not always fit underneath.
A note on Crucial: Micron announced on December 5, 2025 that it is exiting the Crucial consumer business. Consumer shipments continued through February 2026, and Micron says warranty service and support for Crucial products continue (StorageNewsletter, Dec 5, 2025). Crucial RAM on sale today comes from remaining stock.
How much does DDR4 RAM cost right now?
On Amazon.com, DDR4 desktop RAM costs $6.51 per GB according to the ratioDB index, +3.7% over 30 days. DDR4 laptop RAM sits at $6.05 per GB. The index is the median of the 10 cheapest new offers per RAM type.
DDR4 has become much more expensive since 2025. Market researcher TrendForce reported on July 9, 2025 that Samsung, SK hynix and Micron planned to end DDR4 shipments between late 2025 and early 2026, and it expected consumer DDR4 contract prices to jump 40% to 45% in the third quarter of 2025 (TrendForce, Jul 9, 2025). According to Barclays, DDR4 contract prices rose 24% in the 3 months to October 2026, and analysts expect tight DDR4 supply until the end of 2028 (PCGH, Oct 15, 2026). That is a forecast, not a certainty.
In practice, waiting for much cheaper DDR4 is a gamble. If you need the memory now, compare the price per GB across several sizes. The long-term US price chart is on our RAM price history page, and the background is in Why RAM prices are so high.
Is DDR4 still worth it in 2026?
DDR4 is still worth it in 2026 as an upgrade for an existing DDR4 PC. For a new build it rarely is, because the big chipmakers are phasing DDR4 out and current CPUs like AMD's AM5 models need DDR5. An AM4 gaming PC with 32 GB of DDR4 still handles most games and apps.
The end of DDR4 is happening in steps. TrendForce reported in July 2025 that Samsung planned to stop taking DDR4 orders by June 2025 and finish shipments by mid-December 2025, and SK hynix planned to stop orders in October 2025 and ship until April 2026. Micron told customers in June 2025 that DDR4 was entering end of life, with final shipments in the first quarter of 2026 (TrendForce, Jul 9, 2025). In September 2025, TrendForce cited Korea's Maeil Business Newspaper reporting that Samsung and SK hynix would keep making DDR4 through 2026 because prices had climbed so much (TrendForce, Sep 2, 2025).
| Your situation | What to buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| AM4 or DDR4 Intel PC, not enough RAM | DDR4 kit | cheaper than a new platform |
| New PC in 2026 | DDR5 | current CPUs and boards |
| Older laptop with DDR4 | DDR4 SODIMM | the slot decides the type |
When you add DDR4, a complete new kit in your final size is the safest route. Mixing 1 new stick with an old one often works, but Lenovo notes that the system then runs at the speed of the slower module (Lenovo).
Which DDR4 RAM fits my laptop?
Laptops take DDR4 SODIMMs, the short module format for laptops and mini PCs. Most laptop modules in our list run at 2666 or 3200 MT/s. Check your laptop manual for free slots and supported speed, because some models have memory soldered to the board.

How does ratioDB compare DDR4 RAM?
ratioDB pulls Amazon.com prices for every listed DDR4 offer at regular intervals and converts them into price per GB, using the total capacity of all sticks in a kit. The index is the median of the 10 cheapest new offers per RAM type.
Speed and CL come from the listing titles, so they are seller and manufacturer claims. The capacity and brand tables only include new offers from known memory brands. Used modules appear in the list with their condition but never count toward the index. All rules are on our methodology page. The full list is under RAM, DDR4 desktop and DDR4 laptop.
DDR4 RAM FAQ
What is the best DDR4 RAM for gaming?
A 2 × 16 GB DDR4-3200 CL16 kit is the best balance of price and speed for gaming. Its true latency is 10 ns. DDR4-3600 CL18 has the same latency and usually costs more.
Can I put DDR4 in a DDR5 motherboard?
No. A motherboard has either DDR4 or DDR5 slots. AMD lists the Ryzen 7 9800X3D with DDR5 only and the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with DDR4 only. Your motherboard manual tells you which type fits.
Is DDR4 worth it for a new PC?
Rarely. New platforms like AMD AM5 take DDR5 only, and the big chipmakers are phasing DDR4 out. DDR4 is mainly worth buying to upgrade a PC that already uses it.
Is DDR4-3200 or DDR4-3600 better?
DDR4-3600 is faster but needs XMP and usually costs more. True latency is what counts: DDR4-3200 CL16 and DDR4-3600 CL18 both land at 10 ns. DDR4-3200 is enough for most PCs.
Can I mix different DDR4 sticks?
Often yes, but every stick then runs at the speed and timings of the slowest one. A new 2-stick kit in your final size is the more stable option.
Why is DDR4 so expensive now?
The big chipmakers are winding DDR4 down and shifting capacity to DDR5 and HBM. TrendForce expected sharply higher DDR4 prices in mid 2025, and Barclays saw a 24% rise in 3 months in October 2026.
How much does DDR4 RAM cost right now?
On Amazon.com, the DDR4 desktop index is at $6.51 per GB right now (as of Oct 28, 2026 at 1:17 PM UTC). A 32 GB kit therefore costs roughly 32 times that figure. The tables above show the cheapest kits per size.
