Best SSD 2026: Which SSD Is Right for You?

The best SSD for most PCs in 2026 is a PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD with 2 TB, such as the Samsung 990 EVO Plus, the WD_BLACK SN850X or the Kingston NV3. On amazon.com, M.2 NVMe SSDs cost $132.05 per TB right now according to the ratioDB TB index (as of Oct 28, 2026 at 1:17 AM UTC). Which SSD is best for you depends on your slot, your budget and what you use it for.
This guide compares 9 popular SSD lines using manufacturer specs and current prices. ratioDB does not benchmark SSDs. We combine data sheets with price per TB so you can see what you get for your money. All prices come live from the ratioDB database.
What is the best SSD?
The best SSD is the fastest type your device supports at the lowest price per TB. For almost every current PC that is a PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD. PCIe 5.0 pays off for very large files, SATA for older devices without an M.2 NVMe slot.
Find your best SSD in 3 steps:
- Check your slot: Your motherboard or laptop manual says whether you have M.2 with NVMe, M.2 with SATA or only a 2.5" bay.
- Decide on the use: Games, office work and the operating system do not need peak speeds. Video editing with large files benefits from PCIe 5.0.
- Compare price per TB: SSDs in the same class often differ a lot per TB. ratioDB sorts every offer by it.
The cheapest new M.2 NVMe SSD per TB on amazon.com right now is KingSpec NX Series 2 TB at $123.50 per TB. Cheap does not automatically mean good: for lesser known brands, check the warranty and the TBW (terabytes written, the maximum write volume the manufacturer rates the drive for).
Which SSD models are worth buying in 2026?
Proven lines are the Samsung 9100 PRO, WD_BLACK SN8100 and Kingston FURY Renegade G5 with PCIe 5.0, the Samsung 990 PRO and WD_BLACK SN850X with PCIe 4.0, and the Samsung 990 EVO Plus, Lexar NM790 and Kingston NV3 as value picks. All come with a 5 year warranty according to their makers.

A note on Crucial: Micron announced on December 5, 2025, that it is leaving the Crucial consumer business. New stock shipped until February 2026, and warranty service for Crucial SSDs continues (StorageNewsletter, 12/05/2025).
What is the best SSD for gaming?
For gaming, a PCIe 4.0 M.2 NVMe SSD with 2 TB is the best choice. Games mostly need space. A PCIe 5.0 SSD costs more per TB, so the same money buys you more storage with PCIe 4.0.
For games, capacity and price per TB matter most. Models like the Samsung 990 EVO Plus (up to 7,250 MB/s) or the Lexar NM790 (up to 7,400 MB/s) deliver more speed than most games use. If you want to upgrade a PS5, Sony's requirements are in the guide Best SSD for PS5. How much faster NVMe really is in games is covered in NVMe vs SATA.
What is the best PCIe 5.0 SSD?
The fastest PCIe 5.0 SSDs read at up to 14,900 MB/s according to their makers: the WD_BLACK SN8100 at up to 14,900 MB/s, the Samsung 9100 PRO and the Kingston FURY Renegade G5 at up to 14,800 MB/s each. They need a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot, otherwise they run at the speed of the slot.
The manufacturer specs at a glance:
- WD_BLACK SN8100: up to 14,900 MB/s read, up to 14,000 MB/s write at 2 and 4 TB, DRAM cache, 5 year warranty. The SN8100 now comes from SanDisk but still carries the WD_BLACK brand (StorageReview).
- Samsung 9100 PRO: at 2 TB up to 14,700 MB/s read and 13,400 MB/s write, 2 GB DRAM cache, 1,200 TBW and a 5 year warranty (Samsung).
- Kingston FURY Renegade G5: up to 14,800 MB/s read and 14,000 MB/s write at 4 TB, DRAM cache, 1 PB TBW per TB of capacity and a 5 year warranty (Kingston, 05/12/2025).
PCIe 5.0 pays off if you regularly copy large video files or projects. Fast SSDs get warm under load, and many motherboards include heatsinks for their M.2 slots. Per TB they usually cost a lot more than PCIe 4.0 SSDs, the table above shows the current gap.
Which SSD has the best value?
The best value in 2026 comes from PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs without their own DRAM cache, such as the Samsung 990 EVO Plus, the Lexar NM790 and the Kingston NV3. They read at 6,000 to 7,400 MB/s according to their makers and use HMB as a cache.
HMB (Host Memory Buffer) replaces the SSD's own DRAM chip with a small slice of your PC's system memory. Innodisk describes the performance as "closer to DRAM-equipped designs" (Innodisk, 04/13/2026). For games, office work and the operating system that is usually enough.
| Model | Read and write per manufacturer | TBW at 2 TB | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung 990 EVO Plus | up to 7,250 and 6,300 MB/s | 1,200 TB | 5 years |
| Lexar NM790 | up to 7,400 and 6,500 MB/s | 1,500 TB | 5 years |
| Kingston NV3 | up to 6,000 and 5,000 MB/s | 640 TB | 5 years |
Sources: Samsung 990 EVO Plus, Lexar NM790, Kingston NV3. According to Samsung, the 990 EVO Plus runs on PCIe 4.0 x4 or PCIe 5.0 x2.
The NV3 has the lowest TBW in this comparison. 640 TB still lasts for many years: writing 50 GB every day would take about 35 years to reach it. How long SSDs really last is explained in SSD lifespan.
What is the best SSD with a DRAM cache?
Among PCIe 4.0 SSDs with a DRAM cache, the Samsung 990 PRO and the WD_BLACK SN850X are the best known. Samsung rates the 990 PRO at up to 7,450 MB/s read and 6,900 MB/s write, the SN850X is rated at up to 7,300 MB/s read.
A DRAM cache helps with many small writes at once, for example in databases, virtual machines or on very full SSDs. The 990 PRO has 2 GB of DRAM, 1,200 TBW at 2 TB and a 5 year warranty (Samsung). The SN850X has a DDR4 cache and a 5 year warranty (ServeTheHome, SN850X data sheet).
For games and office work, the extra cost of DRAM rarely pays off. How much it has grown in 2026 and where SSD prices are heading is covered in SSD prices.
What is the best SSD for older PCs and laptops?
For older PCs and laptops without an M.2 NVMe slot, a 2.5" SATA SSD is the best choice. Samsung rates the 870 EVO at up to 560 MB/s read, the SATA interface allows no more. Compared with a hard drive, an old PC still boots much faster with it.
The TB index for 2.5" SATA SSDs on amazon.com is $122.93 per TB right now. The Samsung 870 EVO is rated at 560 MB/s read and 530 MB/s write (870 EVO data sheet). Watch out with M.2: some older laptops have an M.2 slot that only supports SATA. There are dedicated M.2 SATA SSDs for those. All models are listed under 2.5" SATA SSD.
What is the best external SSD?
The best external SSD depends on your USB port. Samsung rates the T9 at up to 2,000 MB/s, but only on a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port (20 Gbps). On 10 Gbps ports, the theoretical limit is 1,250 MB/s.
According to Samsung, the T9 reads at up to 2,000 MB/s, writes at up to 1,950 MB/s and has a 5 year warranty (Samsung T9). Many PCs and laptops have no 20 Gbps port. Check which USB port your device has before you buy, or you pay for speed you cannot use. The TB index for external SSDs on amazon.com is $125.50 per TB right now. All models are listed under External SSD.
How much do SSDs cost per TB right now?

SSDs have become much more expensive since fall 2025 because data centers for artificial intelligence buy huge amounts of flash memory. The reasons and forecasts are in the guide SSD prices. For large amounts of data, a hard drive is still much cheaper per TB, see SSD vs HDD.
What should I look for when buying an SSD?
Look at form factor, interface, warranty, TBW and price per TB. Read speed matters less for most people, because even PCIe 4.0 SSDs are faster than games and office software need.
The key points at a glance:
- Form factor: M.2 2280 fits almost every desktop PC, many laptops and handhelds use shorter formats. The number gives width and length in millimeters.
- Interface: NVMe with PCIe 4.0 or 5.0, SATA only for older devices. An NVMe SSD does not work in an M.2 slot that only supports SATA.
- Warranty: Well known lines offer 5 years. A shorter warranty on a very cheap offer is a warning sign.
- TBW: The maximum write volume per the manufacturer. A few hundred TB are plenty for normal users.
- Price per TB: A 2 TB SSD often costs less per TB than a 1 TB SSD.
- Condition: ratioDB labels every offer as new, renewed or used. What to watch for with used drives is covered in Refurbished hard drives.
How does ratioDB compare SSDs?
ratioDB checks the amazon.com prices of every listed SSD offer regularly and converts them to price per TB, with 1 TB equal to 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. The TB index is the median of the 10 cheapest new offers per SSD type.
The manufacturer specs in this guide come from the linked data sheets and product pages, as of 10/22/2026. We do not run our own benchmarks. Every offer is listed with condition, price, capacity and timestamp, and multipacks are divided by their total capacity. All rules are on the Methodology page. The full lists are under SSD prices per TB and M.2 NVMe SSD.
