Refurbished hard drives: Are they worth it and what should you check?

By Engin BuldakPublished Live figures, as of Oct 28, 2026, 1:17 AM UTC14 min read

Refurbished and used hard drives are often much cheaper per TB than new ones. On amazon.com, the cheapest used internal 3.5-inch drive is currently WD Ultrastar DC HC510 10 TB at $24.30 per TB, while the TB index for new models stands at $36.25 (as of Oct 28, 2026 at 1:17 AM UTC). In return you take on more risk: a shorter warranty, an unknown history and, since 2025, used drives that were sold as new.

ratioDB currently finds 80 used or refurbished hard drive offers on amazon.com and labels each one with its condition. This guide explains the difference between used, refurbished and recertified, calculates the savings with real prices and shows how to check a used drive before you rely on it.

What is the difference between used, refurbished and recertified?

Used means someone has already used the drive, often without any testing. Refurbished means a seller or Amazon-qualified supplier has inspected and cleaned it. Recertified means the manufacturer itself has tested, wiped and reissued it with its own warranty.

The terms at a glance:

ConditionWho checks itWarrantyHow to recognize it
Usedusually nobodythe seller's terms onlyseller's description
Refurbished (Amazon Renewed)Amazon-qualified suppliersreplacement or refund within 90 days on amazon.com"Renewed" or "Renewed Premium" in the listing
Seagate recertifiedSeagate6 monthswhite label with a green border marked "recertified"
WD RecertifiedWestern Digital1 yearlisted by Western Digital

Seagate describes its process in 3 steps: sanitize the data, test to Seagate factory performance standards, certify with recertification labeling (Seagate Recertified). A recertified marking and a separate serial number are also engraved on the drive and match the label (Seagate blog, Feb 21, 2025). For WD Recertified, Western Digital only says the drives are "tested and certified to meet Western Digital standards" and claims up to 40% savings (Western Digital).

According to Amazon, Renewed products are "professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers" (Amazon Renewed). According to refurb.me, "Renewed Premium" listings in North America come with a 365-day return window (refurb.me). Check the exact terms on each listing.

How much can you save with used hard drives?

At the same capacity, the cheapest used drive on amazon.com is currently 4.3% to 42.0% cheaper per TB than the cheapest new one. The savings vary a lot by size, and at some capacities new is even cheaper.

The table compares the cheapest new and the cheapest used or refurbished internal 3.5-inch drive at each capacity.

New vs used by capacity, internal 3.5-inch drives on amazon.com, as of Oct 28, 2026 at 1:17 AM UTC

18 TB$39.56$27.78 (used)29.8%
24 TB$79.17$54.04 (used)31.7%

Always factor the shorter warranty and higher risk into the savings. Saving a few percent is hardly worth it on a used drive, while 30% or more can be worth it if you test the drive well and back up your data elsewhere.

Which used hard drives are on amazon.com right now?

The cheapest per TB right now is WD Ultrastar DC HC510 10 TB (used) at $24.30 per TB. That is 33.0% below the TB index for new internal 3.5-inch drives of $36.25. In total, ratioDB counts 80 used or refurbished hard drive offers, 0 of them labeled refurbished.

Which warranty applies to used hard drives?

It depends on who sells: Seagate gives 6 months on recertified drives, Western Digital 1 year on WD Recertified, and Amazon Renewed on amazon.com offers a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt. For other used drives, only the seller's own terms apply.

Read the listing carefully. Some sellers offer their own warranty of several years, which is a promise from the seller, not from the manufacturer. A blog author who buys refurbished drives for his home NAS notes that refurbishers often give 2, 3 or 5 years (patshead.com, Oct 2025). ratioDB is not legal advice, so check the terms that apply to your purchase.

Watch out for OEM drives (models built for system makers). Such drives often have no manufacturer warranty for consumers, only the seller's coverage. That was also the case with the used Seagate Exos drives the German magazine c't bought as new in 2025 (heise online, Jan 23, 2025). Seagate also states that the specs and warranties for new drives do not apply to recertified ones (Seagate Recertified).

What was the 2025 used Seagate drive scam?

In early 2025, used Seagate Exos drives were sold as new in Germany and worldwide. Their hidden usage data mostly showed 15,000 to 36,000 hours of runtime, in single cases about 50,000, while the regular SMART values showed almost zero. The trail led to Chia mining farms in China that had shut down.

The key milestones:

  • Jan 23, 2025: c't buys 2 supposedly new Seagate Exos ST14000NM005G drives. The FARM data (Field Accessible Reliability Metrics, Seagate's internal usage log) shows 10,000 and 15,000 hours, a replacement drive 22,000 hours (heise online).
  • Jan 30, 2025: at least 50 buyers in Germany are affected, including the models ST16000NM000J, ST16000NM001G, ST12000NM0127 and ST12000NM0558. Named retailers include Amazon, Mindfactory, Alternate and Galaxus (WinFuture).
  • Feb 8, 2025: there are over 200 reports worldwide. According to heise, the drives come from Chia mining farms in China that stopped operating. Seagate denies any involvement and takes reports at fraud@seagate.com (Tom's Hardware).
  • Mar 7, 2025: fraudsters now also manipulate the FARM values. Comparing the hours alone is no longer reliable (heise online).
  • May 2025: a raid near Kuala Lumpur seizes about 700 Seagate drives of up to 18 TB that were sold on Shopee and Lazada (TechRadar, Aug 21, 2025). According to CyberInsider, Seagate estimates that up to 1 million drives from Chia farms may have entered the market (CyberInsider, Aug 18, 2025). That number is Seagate's own estimate.

For you, this means even a drive bought as new can be used. If you knowingly buy used, at least you pay a matching price.

How do you check a used hard drive?

Read the SMART values right after purchase. Most important are reallocated, pending and uncorrectable sectors. Backblaze writes: "Drives with zero uncorrectable errors hardly ever fail." For Seagate drives, also check the FARM hours.

SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is every hard drive's self-monitoring. Backblaze uses these 5 values to predict failures (Backblaze, updated Dec 12, 2025):

SMART valueMeaningGood is
5 Reallocated Sector Countreallocated, defective sectors0
187 Reported Uncorrectable Errorsreported uncorrectable errors0
188 Command Timeoutaborted commands0 or very low
197 Current Pending Sector Countsectors waiting to be checked0
198 Offline Uncorrectableuncorrectable sectors found in self-test0

How to proceed:

  1. Read SMART: on Windows with CrystalDiskInfo, on Linux and macOS with smartctl from the smartmontools package.
  2. Read the power-on hours: SMART value 9 shows the hours. For Seagate, compare it with the FARM hours: smartctl -a shows the regular values, smartctl -l farm the FARM values. You need smartmontools 7.4 or newer (Galaxus, Feb 4, 2025). If the FARM value is much higher, the drive was used before.
  3. Check other clues: according to heise, the production date on the label, missing or fake stickers and the QR code, which should open the warranty check with the serial number filled in, all help (heise online, Mar 7, 2025, source above).
  4. Check the warranty with the manufacturer: enter the serial number on the manufacturer's website. If the warranty end doesn't match the seller's claim, be careful.
  5. Test before use: write the entire drive once and read it back, for example with the manufacturer's tool. Then check the SMART values again.

If any of the 5 values shows more than 0 after the test, return the drive within the return window.

How many power-on hours are too many?

There is no fixed limit. For context: one year of 24/7 operation is 8,760 hours. The 15,000 to 36,000 hours of the fake new drives from 2025 therefore equal about 1.7 to 4.1 years around the clock. Clean SMART values and a price that fits the age matter more than the hours alone.

How to convert hours into years of 24/7 operation:

Power-on hoursequals in 24/7 operation
8,7601 year
15,000about 1.7 years
26,2803 years
36,000about 4.1 years
43,8005 years

Many NAS and enterprise drives are built for 24/7 use and come with a 5-year warranty when new. A drive with 2 years of runtime still has a good part of that ahead. What matters is that you know the age and judge the price accordingly. A drive with 30,000 hours at the price of a new one is not a good deal.

Are used enterprise drives like Exos or Ultrastar worth it?

Used enterprise drives are very common on the second-hand market and often especially cheap per TB. They are built for 24/7 operation, and Seagate specifies 550 TB per year of workload and 5 years of warranty for new Exos models. Used, that warranty often no longer applies, and the drives are louder than NAS models.

For new Exos drives with 12 to 32 TB, Seagate specifies an MTBF of 2.5 million hours and an annualized failure rate of 0.35%, all at 7,200 rpm with CMR (Exos datasheet). This exact line was hit by the 2025 fake new drive scam. So check used Exos drives especially carefully, including FARM values and production date.

Also keep in mind: enterprise drives are built for data centers, where noise and power draw matter less. For a NAS in the living room, a quiet NAS drive is often more pleasant. What new NAS models cost per TB is covered in the guide Best NAS hard drive.

How likely is a used hard drive to fail?

According to Backblaze, the failure rate stays flat for most of a drive's life and only rises clearly late. In 2025 it stayed below about 1.3% in the first year and reached its peak of 4.25% only after a little over 10 years. A drive that is a few years old is not automatically a big risk.

Backblaze analyzed the failures of about 317,000 hard drives by age. The classic bathtub curve with many early and many late failures barely shows anymore. For comparison: in 2013, the peak was 13.73% at about 3 years, in 2021 it was 14.24% at 7 years and 9 months (Backblaze, Oct 15, 2025).

In Q2 2026, the failure rate across all 354,415 Backblaze hard drives was 1.73%. The oldest model, the Seagate ST8000DM002 with an average age of 114.8 months, reached 2.46% (Backblaze, Sep 29, 2026). Keep in mind: these figures apply to drives in climate-controlled data centers. You don't know how a used drive was treated before.

What should you do if a used drive shows errors?

Return it within the return window and document the errors with a screenshot of the SMART values. For Amazon Renewed on amazon.com, Amazon offers a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt.

How to proceed:

  1. Record the errors: screenshot of the SMART values with serial number and date.
  2. Contact the seller: through your amazon.com order page, with the screenshot and a short description.
  3. Report suspected fake new drives: if a Seagate drive sold as new shows many FARM hours, report it to the seller and to fraud@seagate.com.
  4. Don't store important data on it: until the issue is resolved, don't use the drive for data you need.

Can there still be data from the previous owner on a used drive?

It can happen. In 2026, a data recovery company found old, recoverable data on supposedly new drives. So wipe a used drive completely before use, and wipe your own drive thoroughly before you sell it.

For you as a buyer, this is mostly a clue about the drive's origin: if a supposedly new drive arrives with someone else's data, you got a used drive. For you as a seller: a quick format is not enough to remove data securely. Manufacturers offer tools that overwrite a drive completely. Seagate says it overwrites the data on recertified drives before testing.

Who are used hard drives worth it for?

Used hard drives are worth it for data that is also backed up elsewhere: as a second backup, in a NAS with RAID 6 or SHR-2 and for media you could download again if needed. For the only copy of important data, a new drive is the better choice.

Typical uses:

  1. Additional backup: a second backup on a used drive beats no second backup at all.
  2. NAS with double redundancy: with RAID 6 or SHR-2, 2 drives may fail. More in the guide Best NAS hard drive.
  3. Media library: movies and music that you can restore from other sources.
  4. Test systems: for experiments, game archives or spare machines.

Used drives are a poor fit as the only home for photos, documents or business data. There, the full warranty of a new drive is worth the premium.

Where is the safest place to buy used hard drives?

The safest options are recertified drives directly from the manufacturer or refurbished products via Amazon Renewed, because testing and warranty are clearly defined there. For regular used offers, the seller, its ratings and clear information on condition and warranty are what count.

The options compared:

  1. Recertified by the manufacturer: Western Digital sells WD Recertified with a 1-year warranty, Seagate gives 6 months on recertified drives.
  2. Amazon Renewed: inspected by qualified suppliers, with a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt on amazon.com.
  3. Sellers with their own warranty: some sellers give several years of warranty. That is the seller's promise, not the manufacturer's, so check who stands behind it.
  4. Private sellers: cheapest, but usually without any warranty. Only buy with SMART values checked in person or by screenshot.

Wherever you buy: test every drive right after purchase, while you can still return it.

How can you tell if a "new" hard drive is actually used?

A truly new hard drive shows 0 or very few power-on hours, a production date only a few months old and a manufacturer warranty that matches the seller's claim. More hours, an old production date or a warranty that is too short are warning signs.

A 2026 case shows it is not limited to Seagate: a data recovery company found old drives from 2009 to 2021 sold as new in USB enclosures, some still with recoverable old data. On some drives, the production date and SMART values had been faked (basic-tutorials.de, Mar 30, 2026). According to heise, a new drive should reach the buyer within about 6 months of production (heise online, Mar 7, 2025, source above).

So check newly bought drives right after unboxing as described above. If something looks off, report it to the seller and, for Seagate, to fraud@seagate.com.

How does ratioDB show used hard drives?

ratioDB shows every offer with its condition: new, refurbished or used. Used and refurbished offers appear in the lists but never count toward the TB index. That keeps the index an honest yardstick for new drives.

The condition comes from amazon.com. ratioDB compares prices and converts them into price per TB, but does not test the drives itself. With the condition selector at the top of every list, you can show only new or only used offers. All rules are on the methodology page. All internal 3.5-inch drives are in the list Internal 3.5" hard drives.

Refurbished hard drives FAQ

Are refurbished hard drives worth it?

Yes, if the savings are large and your data is backed up elsewhere. On amazon.com, the cheapest used internal 3.5-inch drive currently costs $24.30 per TB, while new drives sit at a TB index of $36.25. For the only copy of important data, a new drive is the better choice.

What warranty do refurbished hard drives have?

Seagate gives 6 months on recertified drives, Western Digital 1 year on WD Recertified. Amazon Renewed on amazon.com offers a replacement or refund within 90 days of receipt. Other used drives only come with the seller's own terms.

How long does a used hard drive last?

According to Backblaze, the failure rate stays flat for most of a drive's life and only rises clearly after many years. In 2025, the peak was 4.25% after a little over 10 years. But you don't know how a specific used drive was treated, so a backup is a must.

How do I check a hard drive's power-on hours?

With CrystalDiskInfo on Windows or smartctl on Linux and macOS, SMART value 9 shows the hours. For Seagate, also compare with the FARM hours using smartctl -l farm, which requires smartmontools 7.4 or newer.

Is recertified the same as new?

No. A recertified drive has been used or returned, then tested, wiped and relabeled by the manufacturer. Seagate gives 6 months of warranty on it and states that the specs for new drives do not apply.

Can I use used hard drives in a NAS?

Yes, ideally with double redundancy such as RAID 6 or SHR-2 and an additional backup. Test every drive with a full pass and check the SMART values before installing it.

How many power-on hours are okay on a used hard drive?

There is no fixed limit. One year of 24/7 operation is 8,760 hours. What matters are clean SMART values, meaning 0 reallocated, pending and uncorrectable sectors, and a price that fits the age.

Is a drive with 0 hours always new?

Unfortunately not for sure. In 2025, used Seagate drives with reset SMART values were sold as new. For Seagate, comparing with the FARM hours helps, but according to heise those are now faked too. Also check the production date, label and the warranty via the serial number with the manufacturer.
