A concrete example: the cheapest new 32 GB DDR5 kit for desktop PCs right now is the Crucial Pro 2 × 16 GB for $459.99.

Our history starts on Jul 30, 2026. The real price jump happened before that, between October 2025 and spring 2026. Engadget tracked it with PCPartPicker data: 32 GB of high-end DDR5-6000 that cost just under $250 rose to more than $1,200 (August 15, 2026). The exact figures differ from source to source because each one measures different products and time frames. The direction is the same everywhere.

How have RAM prices developed since 2025?

The memory crisis started in mid-2025 with the phase-out of DDR4 and turned into the biggest RAM price wave from fall 2025 on, driven by demand from AI data centers. The steepest jump came in Q1 2026, with contract prices up 93 to 98 %.

ratioDB has recorded amazon.com prices daily since Jul 30, 2026. Back then the TB index for RAM stood at $5.88 per GB, today it is at $5.98 per GB. The chart at the top of the RAM page shows the trend day by day.

Why are RAM prices so high?

RAM prices are so high because the 3 big manufacturers are shifting production to AI servers and HBM (High Bandwidth Memory). Less is left for PCs, and DDR4 is being phased out at the same time. As a result, DRAM contract prices nearly tripled in 2 quarters.

AI data centers are buying up the memory

Servers for artificial intelligence need huge amounts of fast memory. Market researcher TrendForce reports that new supply goes to servers first. In Q2 2026, DRAM industry revenue reached $154.73 billion, up 59.5 % from the previous quarter (TrendForce, September 7, 2026).

Micron drew its own conclusion and is leaving the consumer business under the Crucial brand. Shipments ran until February 2026. Micron executive Sumit Sadana explained: "The AI-driven growth in the data center has led to a surge in demand for memory and storage" (Micron, December 3, 2025). Crucial modules you still find today are leftover retail stock.

Contract prices exploded

Manufacturers sell DRAM to large customers at contract prices. These prices set what module makers and retailers charge later. TrendForce measured these jumps:

QuarterContract price, conventional DRAM, vs. previous quarterSource
Q4 2025+45 to 50 %TrendForce, Feb 26, 2026
Q1 2026+93 to 98 %TrendForce, Jun 1, 2026
Q3 2026 (forecast)+13 to 18 %TrendForce, Jul 3, 2026
Q4 2026 (forecast)+10 to 15 %TrendForce, Sep 30, 2026

For comparison: in September 2025, TrendForce still expected +8 to 13 % for Q4 2025 (TrendForce, September 24, 2025). The result was +45 to 50 %. Forecasts in this market have recently been far too low.

DDR4 is being phased out

All 3 manufacturers began ending DDR4 in 2025. Samsung stopped taking orders in June 2025, Micron announced end of life in June 2025, and SK hynix stopped taking new orders in October 2025 (TrendForce, July 9, 2025). DDR4 prices nearly doubled in Q3 2025 as a result. Some manufacturers extended production for certain large customers, yet DDR4 stays scarce in retail.

HBM pays better for manufacturers

HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) consists of stacked DRAM chips and sits right next to the compute chips of AI accelerators. The same 3 companies make HBM and regular PC memory. TrendForce expects the average HBM price to rise 121 % in 2027 and calls the memory market "tight through 2027" (TrendForce, September 29, 2026). For manufacturers, every wafer earns more in the server business than in the PC business.

Why can't Samsung, SK hynix and Micron just make more RAM?

The manufacturers are making more, but growth is too slow. Micron expects total industry bit shipments to grow in the mid-20 % range in 2026 and in the low-20 % range in 2027 and 2028. Industry reports say capacity for 2027 is already allocated.

The market belongs to 3 companies. In Q2 2026, Samsung had a 39.4 % market share, SK hynix 24.9 % and Micron 23.3 % (TrendForce, September 7, 2026). When these 3 shift production to servers, there is no other large supplier to fill the gap for PCs.

According to a DigiTimes report covered by the German outlet PC Games Hardware, DRAM and HBM capacity for 2027 is already fully booked. Customers often receive only 60 to 70 % of the volume they ask for (August 6, 2026).

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra expects the market to be "much tighter in calendar 2027 and 2028 than they were in 2026" (Micron, Q4 FY2026 prepared remarks, September 30, 2026).

When will RAM prices go down?

Manufacturers and analysts do not expect relief before 2029. SK hynix calls 2027 the tightest year in industry history, Micron expects tight supply in 2028 too, and Barclays sees relief in 2029 at the earliest. All of these are forecasts and can change.

Here is what the key voices say, each as a forecast:

  • SK hynix: CEO Kwak Noh-jung told Reuters that next year will be "the worst year in the industry's history from the supply perspective". Demand is expected to exceed supply beyond 2030 (Tom's Hardware, July 11, 2026).
  • Micron: 2027 and 2028 much tighter than 2026 (source above).
  • Barclays: contract prices in the 3 months to October 2026 up 24 % for DDR4 and 20 % for DDR5, relief in 2029 at the earliest (PC Games Hardware, October 15, 2026).
  • Citi: the DRAM shortage peaks in Q4 2027 with a 13.9 % deficit (same source).
  • TrendForce: PC DRAM supply could even shrink in 2027 because capacity moves to servers (TrendForce, September 30, 2026).

Short dips still happen. According to an April 2026 report, the DDR5 spot price (the price for memory chips on the open market) fell almost 30 % within 1 month, the first monthly drop since February 2025 according to DigiTimes (TechSpot, April 10, 2026). Since the summer, contract prices have been climbing again according to Barclays. The daily price history is therefore the most reliable way to see when buying makes sense.

Is DDR4 cheaper than DDR5 now?

Per GB, DDR4 is cheaper on amazon.com right now: DDR4 desktop RAM costs $6.51 per GB, DDR5 desktop RAM $15.62 per GB. DDR4 has also become more expensive, +8.1% in 90 days.

DDR4 only makes sense if your motherboard has DDR4 slots. The types are not compatible: a DDR5 module does not fit into a DDR4 slot and vice versa. A new PC on a current platform needs DDR5.

If you upgrade an older PC, DDR4 saves you money per GB. Because DDR4 is being phased out, the selection shrinks and individual kits can get expensive quickly.

Current lists: DDR5 desktop, DDR5 laptop and DDR4 desktop.

Should I buy RAM now or wait?

If you need RAM now, buy now and watch for the 90-day low. Waiting for falling prices means betting against the forecasts of all 3 manufacturers, which expect even tighter supply in 2027.

Here is how to go about it:

  1. Check what you need: 32 GB is a common setup for many gaming and office PCs. More pays off mainly for video editing, virtual machines or large datasets.
  2. Confirm your platform: DDR4 or DDR5, desktop (UDIMM) or laptop (SODIMM). Your motherboard or laptop manual lists it.
  3. Compare price per GB: a 2 × 16 GB kit can cost more per GB than a 2 × 32 GB kit. ratioDB sorts every offer by it.
  4. Watch for the 90-day low: offers with the "90-day low" badge are as cheap as they have been in 90 days.
  5. Save instead of guessing: add candidates to your watchlist. On your next visit, ratioDB shows how the price has changed since you saved it.

How much RAM do I need and what does it cost right now?

For office work and browsing, 16 GB is usually enough; for gaming and streaming, 32 GB is a common setup; for video editing, virtual machines or local AI models, 64 GB and more. A new 32 GB DDR5 desktop kit currently starts at $459.99 on amazon.com, a 64 GB kit at $1,069.99.

The table shows the price of the cheapest new kit for each total capacity and RAM type, so you can see at a glance what an upgrade costs right now.

Cheapest new kit by total capacity on amazon.com, as of Oct 28, 2026 at 1:17 AM UTC

Total capacityDDR5 desktopDDR5 laptopDDR4 desktopDDR4 laptop

32 GB$459.99$479.99$193.99$179.97
64 GB$1,069.99$848.99$379.99no offer

Buy your upgrade as a kit, meaning all modules in one package that the manufacturer sells as a matched set. If you add a second kit later, there is no guarantee that both kits will run together at the same speed.

Are 2 or 4 RAM modules better?

With DDR5, 2 modules are usually the better choice. AMD specifies DDR5-5600 for the Ryzen 9 9950X with 2 modules, but only DDR5-3600 with 4 modules. For 64 GB, pick 2 × 32 GB over 4 × 16 GB.

With 4 modules, 2 modules share each memory channel. That puts more load on the memory controller, so manufacturers support lower speeds. AMD lists these values on its product pages:

Processor2 modules4 modulesSource
AMD Ryzen 9 9950XDDR5-5600DDR5-3600AMD
AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3DDDR5-5200DDR5-3600AMD

Faster kits often won't run at their rated speed with 4 modules. If you buy 32 GB today and want 64 GB later, plan with 2 large modules from the start. Your motherboard manual tells you whether it has 2 or 4 slots.

Is laptop RAM more expensive than desktop RAM?

Yes, right now it is: DDR5 laptop RAM (SODIMM) costs $16.52 per GB on amazon.com, DDR5 desktop RAM $15.62 per GB. Laptop modules are 5.7% more expensive. DDR4 laptop RAM is at $6.05 per GB.

Laptops use smaller modules called SODIMM (Small Outline DIMM). They don't fit desktop slots and vice versa. Many current laptops have no slot at all, because the memory is soldered to the board. Lenovo, for example, states for the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 13: "soldered memory, not upgradable" (Lenovo PSREF).

Check your laptop's spec sheet for free slots before you buy. A newer form factor is CAMM2 (Compression Attached Memory Module), published by JEDEC as standard JESD318 in December 2023 (JEDEC, Dec 5, 2023). CAMM2 modules can be swapped again, but so far only a few devices use them.

Which RAM type fits my PC?

The right RAM type depends on your motherboard: DDR4 or DDR5, desktop module (UDIMM) or laptop module (SODIMM). On Windows, Task Manager shows speed, slots used and form factor under Performance and Memory.

How to find out:

  1. Open Task Manager: On Windows, press Ctrl, Shift and Esc, then go to Performance and Memory. It lists speed, slots used and form factor (DIMM for desktops, SODIMM for laptops).
  2. Read the manual of your motherboard or laptop: It lists the RAM type, maximum capacity and supported speeds.
  3. Compare part numbers: For an upgrade, look for the same module you already have. On ratioDB, the part number takes you to all offers of the same kit.

The lists by type: DDR5 desktop, DDR5 laptop and DDR4 desktop.

What is a good price per GB for RAM?

A good price sits at or below the TB index for the RAM type. For DDR5 desktop RAM on amazon.com that is $15.62 per GB right now, for all RAM types combined $5.98 per GB. The 90-day low of the overall index was $5.78 per GB.

The TB index is an honest benchmark because it is built from the 10 cheapest new offers. If an offer sits well above it, there are almost always cheaper alternatives with the same capacity. ratioDB lists refurbished and used modules separately and never includes them in the index.

One note on units: a RAM module labeled 16 GB technically holds 16 GiB (gibibytes, 2^30 bytes). ratioDB uses the printed number, so the price per GB stays directly comparable across all modules.

Which RAM kits are cheapest per GB right now?

These new kits are the cheapest per GB on amazon.com right now, the 3 best offers for each RAM type. Larger kits are often cheaper per GB than small ones, so comparing by price per GB always pays off.

Each name links to the product page with price history and specs. Before you buy, check that speed and form factor match your motherboard, and compare the full lists by price per GB.

Is used or refurbished RAM worth it?

amazon.com currently lists 29 used or refurbished RAM offers. The cheapest is the Crucial 16 GB (used, DDR4 laptop) at $5.94 per GB, while new modules of that type sit at a TB index of $6.05 per GB.

Used RAM can therefore be cheaper per GB than new. With used modules, check the seller and the return policy, and make sure kits consist of 2 identical modules. ratioDB labels every offer with its condition and never includes used or refurbished offers in the TB index.

Are SSDs and hard drives getting more expensive too?

Yes, SSDs and hard drives are affected as well, though less than RAM. On amazon.com, the TB index for SSDs has changed by +0.3% in 30 days and the one for hard drives by +2.0%.

As early as February 2026, Tom's Hardware reported that SSDs and HDDs were more expensive than ever (February 17, 2026). You can find current prices per group on the SSD prices per TB and hard drive prices per TB pages.

If you need lots of storage and speed is not critical, hard drives remain the cheapest option per TB. Which drive suits a NAS is covered in the guide Best NAS hard drive.

How does ratioDB measure RAM prices?

ratioDB pulls amazon.com prices for all listed RAM offers every 2 hours and converts them to price per GB. The TB index is the median of the 10 cheapest new offers, and the change only compares offers with a price on both days.

Every offer is listed with its condition (new, refurbished, used), price, capacity and timestamp. ratioDB divides multipacks by their total capacity: a 2 × 16 GB kit counts as 32 GB. Shipping costs are not included.

All rules are on the methodology page. The full list of all RAM offers is at RAM prices per GB.
